Humans of State High

“[I’m proudest of] wearing a hijab. Not a lot of Muslims … a lot of girls are scared to do it. Especially… back in Turkey, even though it’s a Muslim country they still discriminate [against] hijabis. …I really fought hard to wear it, like, ‘I wanna wear it, I wanna wear it,’ but my mom was like, ‘not right now.’ And then I came to America, and I wore it, and I feel like that’s such a big thing to do because … there’s a lot of racism and Islamophobia, and I decided to come here … I’m just proud of myself that I’m still wearing it.”
