CARE is branching out! Recently, a group of students got together to bring CARE to State High and State College.
It is a nonprofit organization, this branch is funded by the main group, and their money will go to the events to spread awareness. “Bracelet making or other community service projects for people who are suffering from cancer,” Treasurer Sophia Seidel explained, elaborating on the different events. Possibilities of guest talks at school were also mentioned.
Maggie Wang and Melinda Wu are Co-Presidents of the club and Regional Directors of the area. They are in charge of running the organization. It is only in the early stages, but their idea is to spread support and awareness about cancer. They have guest talks, interactive events, and presentations getting planned out and set up to well educate state college students across the district.
“I was just thinking about how much cancer has had an impact on so many communities around the world,” Melinda said, touching on her inspirations for CARE. They want to support both students with cancer and the hospitals that care for them.
The idea for them is to hit all the bases. Showing support is the biggest factor, from making care boxes for hospitals to providing help to those who have been affected by the disease themselves, whether it was them or someone close to them, but another large thing is prevention. General prevention information has been spread, like wearing your sunscreen, not smoking, etc. But there is so much more to do for cancer prevention, and CARE will be diving into it.
“So we’ve been looking at like Altoona and other schools around this area,” Wang said. They are not strictly teaching State High. CARE is for everyone, so the more schools they can get to the better. They have big plans and hope to educate and keep people safe from cancer and support those who have had their lives affected by it the best they can.
Look out for them in the future, and check out their Instagram and website in the meantime:
