On April 2, the State High Boys Volleyball team won its third game of the spring season against the Chambersburg Trojans at the North Gym.
The Little Lions won the first set against Chambersburg, giving them an early lead. The points were primarily won in the first set by Carter Weight, Sean Spielvogel, and Derrick Campbell.
“I definitely established a presence in the middle early on with some early kills,” Weight said.
Weight believes that the first set pushed them to do better throughout the rest of the game. Campbell agreed, saying that they should have had a stronger impact on the game.
Spielvogel and Weight started off the second set by recording an ace each. Weight came up with some huge blocks and Spielvogel converted with kills.
“My favorite moments were definitely my teammates getting a few big blocks,” Campbell said.
Weight agreed, and said, “One of my other favorite moments was seeing Sean [Spielvogel] succeed on the right side.”
Chambersburg swooped in with an ace of their own, and an intense set followed. “I thought we could clean things up a little bit, and have a more controlling presence over the game, as it was a little bit back and forth.” Weight said.
After a kill by Weight and Senior Sam Li, Chambersburg took a timeout. “I wasn’t super shocked after Chambersburg won the second set,” Campbell said. “As a team, we have to work on minimizing hitting and serving errors.”
Weight said, “Once we started figuring things out, we were able to open up the floor as our passing got better.” The third set started with a kill for State College, then a point for Chambersburg. The Trojans secured a touch call for the next point. Chambersburg took the lead, but couldn’t hold on as the Little Lions made a run, taking the score to 24-18. A block by Weight resulted in State High winning the third set, by a score of 25-19. State College led the match 2-1 after the third set..
The final set kicked off with an ace by Li, then Weight scoring two points in a row. State College held a four point lead, and was just three points away from victory when the Trojans called their final timeout.
The Trojans scored two more points after the timeout but Campbell made a kill, then Spielvogel scored a point of his own to win the game.
“They gave us a good test that made us work hard for our first win of the year.” Campbell said about Chambersburg.
Weight agreed, saying that he thought Chambersburg battled well. “They left it all out on the floor, and throughout the entirety of the match were scrappy, and relentless,” he said.
“I think when we become a team that is fully healthy, and we figure some smaller things out, we can definitely do some pretty special things with this talented, and hard-working group.” Weight said.
The Little Lions are back in action on April 16 when they take on Central Dauphin at 6:30 in the North Gym.
