As the leaves change color, high school students across the country prepare for one of the most anticipated events of the year: Homecoming.

Homecoming is a time when the school bustles with activity, from float-building competitions for the parade to spirit week and sports events such as the football game. It all leads up to the Homecoming dance, an opportunity to dress up and create memories for the 2024-25 school year.

The 2024 State High Homecoming dance was held on Oct. 19 in the south gym of the high school. People began arriving around 7:15 and the doors opened at 7:30 for the dance.

This year’s 2024 Homecoming theme was “Tangled.” The decorations followed the purple and pink color scheme of the movie, with flowers and vines around the railings and stairs and multi-colored lights illuminating the gym.

“My favorite part so far has been the decorations and seeing my friends,” senior Hannah Majewski said.

Freshmen Iris Murray-Wright and Roman Cienfuegos both said they enjoyed dancing on the floor

and experiencing the mosh pit in the gym area. They stated that it was a dance worth coming to and would be a valuable memory of their freshman year.

Student Justina Wang said she loved how many people attended the dance and that it was a great experience to see your friends and be social with other students in the school. “It’s very communal,” Wang said.

Students around State High showed up wearing a variety of things including dresses, both short and long, rompers and suits, and shoes ranging from sneakers to heels. Some students chose to follow the theme of the dance while others went their own way. However, whether students had a date to the dance or simply went with friends, it was an opportunity to wear something you love and hang out with friends.

In addition to the music, a photo booth was available along with multiple photo backdrops. Students were also provided with water and snacks like chips and gummies.

The DJ played the last song around 9:30 when the dance came to an end. Homecoming will make a return for years to come.
