The State High Girls Volleyball Team continued its dominant ways as it took down Altoona 3-0 to win the District VI Championship for the 14th year in a row.
The State College Little Lions took a 13-9 lead in the first half of the first set and finished the set off strong with a score of 25-17. In set two, the Little Lions were propelled to a 25-13 victory with some good serves from senior Brynn Lally and a major save from senior Sarah Tate.
Senior Jessie Campell said the team is all about having fun on the court. “I think that we all know that we have it, so, we all rely on each other, like, we know if someone gets the ball, that they’ll do what they need to,” Campbell said. “We have each other’s backs, and we just, go in wanting to have fun… I think a lot of people sometimes take this sport too seriously, and at the end of the day, it’s just a game, I think prioritizing having fun is the most important part.”
Campbell also said that despite the team’s win, things could always be improved: “We just need to work on some smaller things, like, the little things add up to points.”
The Little Lions were on point in the third set. After a strong kill and multiple other spikes from sophomore Claire Renaud, State College held an 18-8 lead. In the second half of the third set, junior Elena Diaz and senior Annie Lamotta both had good attacks, helping to carry the
team to a 25-10 victory.
After the game, Tate said, “I think everyone individually did their jobs, we did what we’re supposed to do, and I’m really proud of us.”
Tate talked about how great the season has been for the Little Lions: “I think we have all had the same goal(s) since the beginning of the season, and this was definitely one of them, so it’ll be really fun to celebrate it with the team, because we’ve all gotten closer as the season’s gone on, and we’re really excited for the playoffs now.”
The Little Lions ended their regular season with just two losses and a regular season Mid-Penn Championship. The team is back in action in a PIAA state playoff game against North Catholic at 6:00 on Nov. 5 inside the North Gym.
