On Tuesday, Nov. 19, Art Club held its first tie-dye meeting in the art room F160. The members met to have a fun, colorful afternoon tie-dyeing the first club t-shirt.
Art Club president Emma Chen explained why the club chose to hold the event. “We’ve never had a t-shirt before. So this year I’m like, we’re just gonna do it. I designed it.[…] We got our print shop and we got Mrs. Gold to help us out with it,” Chen said. ”So this first year we’re doing it, I’m hoping that our next officer team can also continue it, make it a tradition.”
The officers prepared for the event by designing the t-shirt and buying snacks. Additionally, they made a presentation where various tie-dye techniques were introduced, offering many ideas for everyone to pick their favorite design.
“[The presentation] just went over some of the designs you could choose from. So we have a spiral that a lot of people choose from. We had bullseye, we had a heart design. So people can choose from that. They can learn how to do it,” Chen said.
Art Club also had the help of Art Club advisor Maure Irwin-Furmanek and of art teacher Mrs. Gold in organizing and setting up the event. Irwin-Furmanek took care of ordering t-shirts for every member that was involved, while Gold lent her tie-dye materials.
Irwin-Furmanek stated that creating club t-shirts not only made for a nice activity, but was also going to be useful in the outreach and community events that Art Club often takes part in.
“The whole point of having a t-shirt for our club is because we do so many community outreach [events] and so, like, we’re going to do the Mental Health Fair, we’re going to do something there, so they now they can wear their shirt and kind of be identified as the Art Club,” Irwin-Furmanek said. “That’s probably the best part of doing something like that, creating this unified community.”
The Art Club members were satisfied with their result when they got their t-shirts back on Nov. 26. While the tie-dye event was successful, it is not all that Art Club has to offer. Art Club is continuing to add art to everyone’s life at State High, by making the murals that adorn the walls of the building and offering artists a chance to explore their passion.
Art Club is mural-centered but its members can also work on their own projects or art homework. Their current project is a space themed mural that is projected to be in the C-pod by January.
Chen explained the mural creation process. “We paint on paper, and then we cut it out, and then we paste onto the walls,” Chen said. “So during our club, we’re working on, like, actually painting it down. And then I think around December, January, all the officers will go up, and then we’re gonna glue [the paintings] onto the walls.”
Art Club meets every Tuesday from 3:45-4:45 in F160. Interested members can learn more about Art Club’s projects and upcoming meetings by following their Instagram @statehigh.artclub.
