Clubs at State High are a cornerstone of the school, and any school, for that matter, around the globe. They serve as a time for people to come together and either celebrate and display excellence in whatever field chosen or come together to celebrate good times with friends and take a little stress off the day-to-day routine, and State High’s Games Club is nothing but a great way to do just that.
The Games Club at State High has been around since the 2000s and serves as a great place to meet new people or spend quality time with friends. However, after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the club took a big hit population-wise. However, Elizabeth Delafield, an history teacher at State High, saw an excellent opportunity for people to get together.
A previous advisor for the Anime Club, Delafield started advising the Games Club this year and shared her insight on the club.
“My brother was a part of the club when it first started, and he had very fond memories of it, and I like clubs where people can just come together and socialize and have fun, and there’s not a lot of pressure, it’s a chance to build community,” Delafield said.
This light-hearted environment contrasts some of the other clubs at State High; it doesn’t always have to be hyper-competitive, and it can, above all else, be simple and fun.
Sophomore Jonathan Delafield is spearheading the new club’s recreation and revival and described his hopes for the club.
“I kind of pushed for it to be created. Because I don’t really have much of a way to hang out with my friends outside of school because it’s really hard to coordinate several schedules at the same time, but games club helps us to agree on a time ahead of time,” Jonathan Delafield said. His main hope and goal for the club is for anyone looking for a concrete time to hang out with their friends and catch up with whatever might be going on in their lives.
Jude Vogt, a member of Games Club, gave insight into some of the struggles of the games club. “I think games club was around at the start of last year, but it got shut down because of a lack of attendance,” Vogt said.
Because of the aforementioned issues that the Games Club had getting back on its feet, it had to close last year. However, on the bright side, the club is back this school year thanks to the efforts of Jonathan and Elizabeth Delafield.
“I saw it [games club] back on the announcements, and I thought oh, they brought it back from the dead! And my friends said we should go to the Games Club, so I went,” Jonathan Delafield said.
Overall, the Games Club at State High is a welcoming space for everyone, regardless of background and experience. It is an excellent option to relax, play games, and most importantly, spend quality time with friends that can be sorely missed due to factors outside of control.
