The classic horror film, “Nosferatu,” has been adapted by Robert Eggers, and was released to the public as of Dec. 25, 2024.
What most wouldn’t expect from this movie’s release, was a revival in gothic and victorian fashion and music.
The movie features actors and actresses such as Lily Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgard, Nicholas Hoult, and William Dafoe. These beloved film stars made “Nosferatu” a movie that people believed was worth seeing, even before its release.
What promoted “Nosferatu” even further was social media. Giana Haywood, a movie lover who’s been waiting to watch the movie talks about what made her want to see it.
“It was Tiktok that made me wanna watch it, cause I kept seeing previews of it,” Haywood said.
When looking at “Nosferatu” online, on platforms like TikTok, there isn’t much discussion about the plot of the movie itself. The discussion seems more about the things surrounding the plot such as the general themes, and the overall impression of the movie, rather than specific moments from the film.
The themes of the 2024 film are dark and gothic, keeping true to the original “Nosferatu” (1922) directed by F.W Murnau. Dreadful nightmares, and possession haunt the narrative, making the movie very intense.
However the most dramatic part about the film are the costumes. Ellen, played by Rose Depp wears beautiful and ghastly dresses, with styles fitting for the time the film was set in (1838,) yet also extravagant and beyond the usual dress of others in the movie.
Junior Hadley Milhomme discussed how she’s seen the themes and style in the movie reflect in the world around her.
“Many people that I surround myself with express themselves through music which matches the Gothic style” Milhomme said. “That has seemed to be a trend, and it is really cool to see.”
Milhomme isn’t the only one who’s seen a rise in a gothic or more extravagant sense of expression around State High, and around the world.
Sophomore Tom Zipf shared his viewpoint. “I’ve seen a lot of different fashion, the new trendy stuff is, I guess alternative is the right word,” Zipf said.
Influencers such as Nora Fawn have made many videos showcasing their extravagant “Nosferatu” outfits. These videos have gained lots of attention online, and they’ve made people feel more comfortable expressing themselves through what used to be seen as an unconventional sense of style.
Zipf discussed how dressing in a way that is alternative to the norm, feels easier now than before due to the film. “I feel like it’s easier to do because it feels like a lot more people are doing it now.”Zipf said.
As of recently, there’s been an undeniable rise of more alternative senses of style, but with style, also comes music taste.
More gothic and alternative styles of music have been becoming more and more popular, like bands such as The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Deftones, and Type O Negative. Even if some of these bands aren’t necessarily ‘goth’ as the 80’s had described it, the internet has opened its arms and put it under the goth umbrella.
The release of Nosferatu has brought a rise in the popularity of alternative fashion, gothic fashion and music, and made these subcultures and styles more a part of the norm.
