Humans of State High

“I started twirling when I was in fifth grade and I had a friend whose older sister was doing parades. She was sharing it at a morning circle of sorts and I was doing dance at the time, and thinking of stopping dance and so I heard that her older sister was doing this parade and I was so excited to try something new. So I ended up joining the team: “M Twirling” and I started learning how to twirl slowly by slowly. Then I joined a competition team and [it has] been from there.” (1/3)

“I love the movement and expression of it. One of my favorite things is rolls which is pretty much using your body and always being in contact with the baton to move it around yourself. Many people dislike rolls because they’re so intricate and very very time-precise with the movements. I love just being able to feel the baton and moving around and the music and everything it’s just such a fun sport.” 2/3

“Two weekends ago I was at “Congressional Cup” which I was not an invitee though some were. For instance, a lot of college twirlers like our own Mackenzie Bronk were there, and a few other twirlers that I look up to. This was the first time I was in a level called intermediate and also competing 16+ which meant that my age division just went up a huge amount in size and so I was not expecting to place and I ended up placing third which was pretty incredible I had so much fun out there and I got all my goals for the day like my rolls section — ironically enough. I got my goal of having a no drop no break section which I’m very proud of.” 3/3
