On April 22, the State High Boys Volleyball team brought a fourth win to their season against Altoona at the North Gym.

The Little Lions got off to a great start by winning the first set.  Junior Carter Weight, senior Sam Li, and sophomore Derrick Campbell worked together to show off their skills.

In the second set, junior Sean Spielvogel shined, recording kill after kill by spiking the ball defensively. Weight also showed out with many blocks.

This was State College and Altoona’s second meet of the season. “We won 3-0 but we lost to them in five the last time we played them earlier in the season, so we have made significant progress,” Spielvogel said.

In the third set, Spielvogel starred again. The score remained close throughout the entire set.  State College made a run late in the set, causing Altoona Head Coach, John Saboe to call a timeout.  However, State College didn’t slow down and won 25-20.

“Overall, we’ve gotten a lot better as the years gone on. Earlier, we started to struggle but as it became longer, we’ve started to come together as a team,” Campbell said.

The boys started their season off with a loss, but Campbell and Head Coach Chad Weight are in agreement on the team’s overall progress.

“Overall we’ve gotten a lot better as the years gone on, earlier we started to struggle but as it became longer we’ve started to come together as a team,” Campbell said.

Weight said, “Although we started the season with some kids a little banged up with some injuries and illnesses, we are finally down to the last few matches finally moving forward in a positive direction. We got one of our last games at home so all things are trending the right way.”

With the final matches of the regular season coming up, that means the start of the District VI and State Playoffs.

Spielvogel said, “I think [we’ll make states] for sure. I’m confident that we’ll go undefeated the rest of the season.”

“I feel like we do have a shot of winning the state championship as long as we just come out every night and play well,” Campbell added,

The JV team took a close 2-1 loss to start off the night, however, they have come a long way from the beginning of the season. JV took the first set down to the wire but lost, 29-27.

Noah Nussbaum led the team to a win in the second set with some shocking blocks. Later, they lost the third set 15-3, losing their match. “I think we played well but we definitely could have done better and in the 3rd set we kinda fell apart but our 2nd and 1st sets went well,”  Nussbaum said.

The boys have potential to advance the rest of their season and on May 4, when the Little Lions are back in action at the North Gym at 7:00 am.
