As Halloween approaches, costume fans are getting ready for the most creative time of the year. While some have had outfits planned for months in advance, others are still asking the question: what should I wear? This year is proving to be a standout year for Halloween costumes, with trends encompassing pop singers, movie stars and horror characters.
While costumes change every year, one recurring theme is the enormous amount of pop star costumes. From the classic Taylor Swift costume to the new and admired Chappell Roan costume, fans are sure to go all out with their inspired looks and recreated outfits.
Famous celebrities like Charli XCX and Jojo Siwa are sure to have people recreate some of their iconic looks. With “Brat summer” and “Karma”, fans will take the opportunity to have fun with iconic makeup looks from music videos and viral TikToks.
Junior Elizabeth Stoner commented on how pop singers are sure to pop up in the year’s popular costumes.
“Celebrities like Jojo Siwa as a joke, Chappell Roan, a lot of those,” Stoner said. “I didn’t really know about last year’s trends but this year I think there will be more pop culture from last year.”
Movie characters have always had their moment, and while there may not be as many Barbies this year, characters from Inside Out 2 and Wicked are great for group costumes.
Junior Zoe Salter noted that many couples are finding movie characters to dress up as from TikTok.
“I’ve noticed a lot of, like, couples costumes with, like, Fantastic Mr. Fox and other things,” Salter said. “I would tell somebody to not look on TikTok, because I’ve seen all the same ideas, even though they’re adorable.”
This year, many people are realizing that they don’t necessarily have to buy an expensive costume from Amazon or take hours making one themselves but instead they can use clothes they already own to come up with a standout costume. Popular social media searches show that people are using their own wardrobe to create costumes like “Elle Woods’ bunny costume” and “Mean Girls Santa costume”.
Junior Esmee Sherrill discussed how she’s seen many people use their own clothes to make fun costumes, including herself.
“[I’ve seen] a lot of outfits with mini skirts and coordinating colors that people call a costume [with the] clothes that they have, but then they make it into a costume,” Sherrill said. “I think more people are doing DIY costumes because they’re easier, and people have clothes that they can just make into a costume. [..] That was my trend.”
Halloween 2024 promises to be an exciting celebration with endless possibilities of different ensembles. Whether you are opting for a standout pop culture reference or an intricate DIY creation, this year’s costumes offer something for everyone. As you prepare to unleash your creativity onto a dazzling costume, remember that Halloween is the best time to let your imagination run wild and go all out!
