On Dec. 3, video game developer Mojang Studios released the new Pale Garden biome in Minecraft. Minecraft has been close to the hearts of many since coming out in 2009, but Mojang has surprised gamers by adding the mystical Pale Garden.

A new Minecraft biome hasn’t been added since the Caves and Cliffs update in 2021, which enhanced the games interactiveness and made caves and natural structures more intricate.

Unique sound effects and a grey sky following the player only in the Pale Garden creates a beautifully creepy atmosphere that stands out from the rest of the Minecraft world.

The new biome itself is cause for excitement from fans of the game, but what makes this update even more expansive are the details in the new biome.

The Pale Garden features floors of pale moss, hanging pale moss, and pale oak along with various kinds of wood.

“I love them, but why is it so hard to find?” sophomore Mae Schnable said.

The Pale Garden will only spawn in new chunks of land that the player hasn’t explored yet, causing the Pale Garden to be a beautifully rare biome.

“I’m glad they’re finally adding gray, cause I do like that color scheme,” sophomore Ryan Wentzel said. Many people who predominantly build while playing Minecraft have been looking for more cool toned wood blocks for a while.

But it’s not only the new building blocks- new life spans in the biome as well.

The Creaking is an interesting looking mob that contrasts with the rest of the beasts in the game, with burning orange eyes and a cracked wooden figure that creaks as it follows the player.

This mob only spawns in the Pale Garden, only spawns once night falls, and is confined strictly to the Pale Garden biome.

“It’s interesting that they’re trying to up the horror factor after so many years,” Wentzel said.

The Creaking will not be able to take any kind of damage from the player, until they break the Creaking Heart block concealed within the forests. The block is found only inside the Pale Oak trees towering over the ground.

The Pale Garden is the creepiest and most interesting biome in the game so far, though questions are raised about why Mojang hasn’t added a biome like this until now.

“It just seems like Mojang is trying to catch up to all the modded stuff, so it’s not really all that,” Wentzel said.

Since Minecraft is a game that’s been available to almost anyone with a laptop, computer, or gaming console, there’s been many free and easily available modified versions of the game, called “mods”.

Although the Pale Garden is very striking and macabre, there have already been mods that create a horrific atmosphere and mobs similar to the Pale Garden; such as the Cave Dweller mod, the Weeping Angel mod, and the Graveyard mod.

The Pale Garden is the exact kind of biome that many players have been looking for, and for a while. While Mojang has its faults, they’ve managed to create a beautiful new biome, and change Minecrafts gameplay experience in a visually striking and beautiful way.
