On April 3, Icelandic singer-songwriter Laufey (Pronounced Lay-Vay) dropped her single “Silver Lining.” Freshman Claire Campbell explains how she discovered the artist and when she first started listening.

“I’ve been listening to Laufey since 2022 and I when first discovered ‘Valentine’ I was like oh, this is actually really good, and then I discovered she had a Busa Nova influence and I’m Brazilian so my mom really liked that, and so I showed her the music then we kind of bonded,” Campbell said.

Laufey began her music career in April 2020 when she released her debut single “Street by Street,” which she then followed up with her debut EP “Typical of Me.”

Junior Mackie Schark had a different experience with discovering Laufey.

“I’ve been listening to her for almost 2 years and I started listening to her after a breakup because I love her and I heard one of my friends was going through a breakup and was listening to her a lot,” Schark said.

Junior Zoe Michaleris has never heard of Laufey or listened to her music, but still gave her thoughts on the new song.

“I think it’s pretty nice. I don’t have much musical knowledge [On Laufey] to say much but I like that its very smooth and pretty sounding,” Michaleris said.

According to an interview the Laufey did with NME, “’Silver Lining’ is a love song about being able to set your true personality free when you fall in love. Your inner child comes out and you emboldened by lust. Even if it takes you to hell, at least you’re with your partner.”

Sophomore Cal Torbert started listening to Laufey after one of the artist’s songs went viral on social media.

“I started listening because one of her songs got popular on TikTok.. but I did know about her a couple years prior because my dad listened to her and I was listening to her unknowingly,” Torbert said.

The GRAMMY-winner teased on social media that the song is a sample of “what’s to come,” Campbell gave her thoughts on if the artist is releasing another album and if it will be similar or different to her previous works.

“Oh, I definitely think she’s releasing a new album. And I think she’s going to at least try and keep her style intact, but she might also switch it up a little,” Campbell said.

Schark agreed with Campbell but gave a different opinion on the new albums differences.

“I think she will release another album soon but I think that it’s going to be a little bit different. I think it’s going to be more like ‘Goddess in how ‘Goddesswas very different from the rest of the album [Laufey’s ‘Bewitched: The Goddess Edition album] because it was one of the only that she belted and was really in her voice and I feel like that’s kind of what ‘Silver Lining’s’ giving people a taste of,” Schark said.

With the new single, Laufey also dropped a new music video that goes with the song. The video takes place at a gentle turned chaotic masquerade ball with the artist dancing around with other guests. At the very end of the music video, she is seen with a guy sharing a milkshake together.

Whether or not the single is teasing an upcoming album, Laufey fans are more than satisfied with “Silver Lining” and its accompanying music video.
