The State High Girls Tennis Team wrapped up one of its strongest seasons to date, showing effort, dedication and teamwork throughout the year. As they head into the playoffs, players reflected on what made this season so special and how their bond as a team fueled their success.
Senior Audrey Brush said this year stood out as one of the best.
“I think this season was one of our best seasons we’ve ever had,” Brush said. “The team’s been closer together than in previous years, and everyone really has a role to play and knows what they’re meant to do.”
The team improved by putting more effort into both practices and matches.
“Everyone gave it their all this year,” Brush said.
As a senior finishing up her high school tennis career, Brush admitted that staying motivated wasn’t always the easiest, but it was worth it.
“Sometimes motivation can be hard,” Brush said. “But as a senior, I remind myself that I’ll miss it in college, and that keeps me going.”
Furthermore, sophomore Purvi Narayanan agreed that this year’s success came from the team’s focus and support for one another.
“Everybody stepped up this year and contributed, whether they were on varsity or JV,” Narayanan said. “We all supported each other, and that really helped.”
Narayanan also mentioned that while the team was having a slow start, they quickly found their rhythm.
“Our first match was a bit rough,” she said. “But after the second or third one, we knew what we had to do. We were locked in.”
Narayanan added that the team’s encouragement made the biggest difference during matches.
“Whenever I’m on the court and things get tough, my teammates are always there,” she said, “Even if I lose, they’re super supportive and tell me, ‘you’ve got it.’ That really helps.”
Junior Joanna Liu highlighted the balance between competition and connection this season.
“The team worked really hard to earn the wins we got,” Liu said. “The regular season wasn’t too challenging, but districts really tested us. It was a great way for us to grow and bond as a team.”
Liu also emphasized how important team chemistry was, especially with so many new players joining this year.
“There were a lot of new freshmen, so we definitely had to get to know each other,” she said. “It was a great opportunity for team bonding.”
One of her favorite moments came during districts,
“I played a girl I had lost to six times before,” Liu said. “But this time, I focused, stayed confident, and I won. That felt really good.”
As an upperclassman, Liu mentions it’s been rewarding to take on a leadership role.
“The seniors before me showed me the way,” she said. “Now I get to lead the younger girls, and it’s exciting to switch roles.”
As the playoffs continued, the team remained confident and proud of everything they’ve accomplished.
“We’ve all worked hard, supported each other, and played our parts,” Brush said. “That’s what made this season special.”
The season not only highlighted the team’s athletic ability but also their dedication to one another and the sport. Through resilience and strong team chemistry, the players built lasting memories that will carry beyond the courts. As they look ahead to next year, the Little Lions hope to build on this success and continue to represent State High with determination.
