On Wednesday, April 22, the Little Lions faced Chambersburg and lost a tough game, 8-4.
State College hoped to bounce back after a close 1-0 loss to Chambersburg on March 31.
“Last time we had such a close game … so we were hoping that we were going to be able to win this one, but it didn’t end up the way we wanted it to,” junior Kara Rhinehart said.
The game started slowly, with neither team scoring in the first three innings.
The pace picked up in the fourth inning when Chambersburg scored a run. The Little Lions responded with three runs of their own.
“The highlight of the team’s game would be whenever we rallied and scored three runs in one inning,” junior Sarah Mellott said.
In the fifth inning, the Trojans scored two runs to tie the game at 3-3.
“Throughout the game, it was competitive,” Mellott said.
Another member of the varsity team, sophomore Victoria Witmer said, “They’re a really good team. They have a lot of potential.”
Chambersburg scored one run in the sixth inning, while State High was unable to respond, making it 4-3.
In the seventh inning, the Trojans took off, scoring three runs to extend their lead. Their teammates off the field erupted with cheers as they took a five-run lead.
But the Little Lions weren’t done. At the end of the game, Witmer hit a home run, ending the game on a positive note despite the loss.
“I think we all just get along very well, [and] we’re able to come back from hard times and pick each other up,” Witmer said.
“When we work together, it’s just cheering everyone on, no matter what, like keeping the spirits up, so people have confidence to play their best,” Mellott said.
“I think we really just want to make it to the playoffs, cause we’ve always made it to the first round and never completed. So I think as long as we can keep going, that’s where our goal is,” Witmer said.
The day after their loss to Chambersburg, the Little Lions faced Altoona and won 14-4. On Tuesday, April 28, they played a double header against Cedar Cliff, winning the first game 17-1 and the second 17-7, improving their record to 8-4. They return home on Thursday, April 30, to face Mechanicsburg.
