As the school year begins, it’s a great time for students to get their fashion on point.

Around State High, you can expect fashion from dresses and sandals to hoodies and sweatpants. Students love trends like athletic wear, low-rise jeans, off-the-shoulder statements, and much more. For many students, fashion is their way of expressing themselves to their peers and friends while growing their self-confidence.

“Our school talks about togetherness a lot… but I feel like we are pretty divided in terms of fashion because we all shop at different stores, we buy different things, and we also tend to gravitate towards people who dress similar to us because that tends to lead to similar interests,” sophomore Amelia Pearson said. She described fashion as, “A way to express one’s interests.”

Fashion can vary depending on the season, wearing darker colors in winter and fall, and light colors in spring and summer. This often depends on what stores are selling per season, and overall what people feel attracted to. After all, everyone has their preferences.

to top it off. She is inspired by fashion designer and businesswoman Vivienne Westwood and Anne Hathaway.

Pearson described how a good outfit can lead to a good day. “…You’re gonna come to school, you’re gonna be happier, you’re gonna be more present, but I think if you’re running late, you just throw something on you don’t like it, then you’re gonna feel bad about that,” she said.

Senior Anya Locke agreed with Pearson. “If you’re worried about your appearance then you are less likely to to enjoy your day,” Locke said. She also spoke on the styles around our school. “I wouldn’t say anything is specific to State High… What I see on social media and TikTok, I feel a lot of high schoolers have the same comfy and athleisure style.”

Locke described her style as outdoorsy and comfy. “Personally for me, what I wear to school I would wear outside of school,” Locke said. She also brought up that lots of people usually dress more comfortably in school but are more outgoing with their fashion in public.

Sophomore Audrey Hertert gave her advice for someone trying to find their style. “I know a big part of that for me was just who I was hanging out with, and how that influenced myself. Also, money, because clothing is not cheap, so I just thought I would start budgeting and asking my parents for help with that. And I just started with style, and just went from there,” she said. Her favorite fashion statement is an off-the-shoulder look.

Hertert noted part of the reason State High style is so widespread is because the dress code takes such a big role in what people wear, and here students are lucky enough not to have a strict dress code. This lets people express themselves without feeling like they are breaking rules, while still being reasonable.

Hertert concluded, “A lot of people can be judgy with outfits, especially if you’re not wearing the norm, or what everyone else is wearing. But if you feel confident in yourself and the things you’re doing, style has a big impact on that, and it can definitely influence your day.”
