The influence of State High’s biggest community service club, Key Club, has just expanded. Heidi Egerer, a junior at State High, will serve as Pennsylvania’s next Key Club Governor.

Key Club is a branch of the Kiwanis Organization intended for high school students. State High’s Key Club meets every Tuesday after school for an hour. Key Club, part of an international network, has a mission to make the world a better place through community service. It operates through four key values: leadership, character building, caring, and inclusiveness.

“[Heidi Egerer] served the District board this year as Lieutenant Governor for District 6. And she did a great job with communicating and helping people out with project ideas and forwarding some of the district-wide projects that she was running. So I think that this is a logical step up for her,” senior Mirabella Bills, the current president of State High’s Key Club, said.

“[Egerer] has a lot of experience with organizing community service and getting our students involved,” State High Key Club Advisor Ashley Corvin said.

Key Club means a lot to Egerer, who has been a member since her freshman year.

“Key Club, for me, is always about service over self, it’s that I need to dedicate, not need, but I get to dedicate my time and I get to go do service. And I have the opportunity to give back to my community and it’s not mandated, it’s something that’s fun and I enjoy. It’s something that I’m truly passionate about,” Egerer said.

This term, Egerer wants to focus on building each individual member’s leadership and boosting engagement.

“I’m super excited to connect with people all around the state [and learn]  why other people are passionate about Key Club so I can spread their love and see what their commitments are for,” Egerer said.

The work is never over for Key Club, which always has goals to accomplish.

“We have a garden idea in the works with a reading bench, and then also we’ve been trying to get something organized for Veterans Day. So those are two projects that we would really like to see come together sometime, if not this year,” Corvin said.

Bills explained the impact Key Club has on both our school community and the broader community.

“I think Key Club helps to start high school students on a path of community service. I hope that the members of our club will continue to serve the community outside of Key Club and, you know, later on into their lives,” Bill said. “So I think that it kind of provides an entry into community service, I guess, to show people that you don’t have to have a ton of time or money to help out.”

Editor’s note: Heidi Egerer is the Lions’ Digest business manager, however, she was not involved in the writing of this article beyond providing background information and an interview.
