Christmas is More Than Just a Day, It’s a Season

This is the large Christmas tree in NYC from 2024. The tree is very tall and has rainbow colored lights on it with a big star at the top and apartments in the background.

Two big holidays fall within a month of each other at the end of the year and are among the biggest and most celebrated holidays that people go all out for: Thanksgiving and Christmas. While both of these holidays are amazing, there is a huge debate about when to start celebrating Christmas. Can you skip the Thanksgiving spirit to start celebrating Christmas, or do you have to wait for Thanksgiving to pass?

Christmas is a favorite holiday for many, about one-third of Americans, but it is more than just a holiday; it is a season. Thanksgiving falls in the Christmas season, and while it does deserve to be celebrated, people can do that while celebrating Christmas as well. Being in the Christmas spirit does not take away from Thanksgiving Day, and you can still celebrate Thanksgiving while being in the spirit of Christmas.

There’s no important holiday in fall, and nobody skips Thanksgiving, but it only deserves one day. Celebrating Christmas does not take away from Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a meal with your family for one day,” eighth grader Olivia Fiore said.

I feel like on Thanksgiving, it’s just kind of like the one-day break between, like, Halloween and Christmas,” freshman Izzy Nguyen added.

Christmas is such a special time of year and makes many people around the world happier and in a good mood. Once Halloween is over, people jump straight into the Christmas season, which improves their mood, not just for themselves but also for their family and friends. The whole winter and Christmas season is high energy, positive and uplifting.

I absolutely love Christmas because it’s just so warm and cozy, and it’s so much fun. It gets me in such a good mood,” Nguyen said.

During the Christmas season, there are so many fun things to do. Whether that be driving around and looking at Christmas lights, watching movies, baking cookies, listening to Christmas music, decorating, or something else, there is something for everyone. Many people listen to Christmas music because there are so many songs to listen to, the music is very happy, and it just gets them in the mood for Christmas. However, during Thanksgiving, there are not as many options activity-wise. There is typically a nice meal with family or friends and watching the Macy’s Day Parade, but that’s about it.

I just feel like Christmas is just overall better. I feel like there’s more during the Christmas season, like decorations and music, and just things in general,“ Nguyen said. “It always makes me happier seeing Christmas lights.”

While Thanksgiving is important and fun to see family and friends, Christmas is so much more than that. It’s more than just a day, but a season that makes many people happier, is such an amazing thing to experience, and is the best time of year.
