As students return to school this year, it’s a common time for them to tune into their inner fashion sense.

Here at State High, there are many fashion styles. From dresses and skirts to sweatpants and hoodies, students use fashion as a way to express themselves and to boost their confidence. Whether they prefer Converse, Uggs, or Birkenstocks, all students can agree that there are some unique styles at State High.

Briley Aikey, a freshman at State High, thinks that fashion allows students to have an outlet for their creativity. “I think it gives everybody a way to express themselves with colors and…colors, patterns, and stuff,” Aikey said.

Popular fashion can vary a lot based on the trends that are popular on social media. Influencers on TikTok and Instagram display styles that often become popular in everyday life.

Aikley has noticed some popular trends at State High. “I know this is kind of almost like last year, too, but blazers and flared jeans and leggings. But online, I’ve noticed a lot more people loving the country look, and I absolutely adore that because it’s so pretty,” Aikely said.

Sophomore Abigail Darling has seen trends around the school as well. “I have definitely seen streetwear, so like baggy clothes and off-the-shoulder tops, numbered clothes, stuff like that. I feel like also Y2K or the 2000s, it’s not super prominent, but it’s definitely there,” Darling said.

Darling’s personal style is influenced by the 2000s. “I was really inspired by a lot of 2000s movies. So like “Clueless,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” and “Mean Girls,” she said.

Darling appreciates that fashion allows people to show their true personality. “In classes and stuff, I don’t think my personality really shines through, just through myself. So I really love that I can express my personality, like everything that I do, through the clothes I’m able to wear,” she said.

Aikley agreed with Darling. “It’s a lot easier whenever somebody doesn’t know you … if somebody, you know, doesn’t want to be talked to, they’ll have their hood up and headphones on, versus somebody who’s, you know, colorful and…talking to everybody,” said Aikley.

It can be nerve-wracking to try a new look at school, but it is worth the risk. “Always wear something that you’re comfortable with, and also to like wear the piece, people, they genuinely do not care, and if they are caring or commenting, most of the time, nine out of ten times it’s a compliment,” said Darling.

Aikley adds to that advice. “Express yourself. You don’t have to stick to one style. If one day you just want to be cozy, wear sweatpants and a hoodie, go for it. If you want to wear something fun and colorful the next day, or if you want to wear something that…doesn’t match, do it. If it makes you happy, just do it because I can almost guarantee you nobody will care,” she said.

As this new school year begins, students haven’t been afraid to express their personality and let their inner selves shine through the clothes and accessories they wear.
