With Halloween right around the corner, spooky season activities, movies, and traditions are starting back up. There is so much to do during the fall festive season, like haunted houses, pumpkin patches, apple picking, Halloween and many more.

Complex.com says that last year, the best fall shows and movies were Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Monsters. IMDB says that this year, the fall movies to look out for are The Conjuring and Twinless. They are all mainly horror films. Aside from those two movies, sophomore Sarah Zembower shares another movie she likes.

“The Charlie Brown Halloween movie,” Zembower said. “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” was released in 1996 and has been a fan favorite since then.

Freshman Raegan Kanaskie says her favorite fall movie is Hocus Pocus. Hocus Pocus came out in 1993.

As people drive around State College for the spooky season, you will see that many people like to decorate. Community members may see decorations like ghosts, witches, or pumpkin inflatables, as well as carved pumpkins, scarecrows, monsters or any other spooky season decorations.

Zembower plans on decorating her barn to get in the mood for a spooky season. “I’ll decorate with pumpkins and leaf garland,” Zembower said.

Once the spooky season starts, many people go to pumpkin patches and do many different activities there. They could participate in apple picking, fall fests, pumpkin picking and many other fun fall-related activities.

Kanaskie shared that she will be going to Wasson Farm. Zembower also says she will be going to Way Fruit Farm to participate in fall activities.

Zembower said her favorite part of spooky season is, “Seeing everyone’s costumes on TikTok and seeing everyone’s Instagrams and stories.”

One thing I am looking the most forward to this fall is going to a pumpkin patch and trick or treating with my friends,” Kanaskie said.

Speaking of costumes, trick or treating is always a huge event that happens every Oct. 31. CBS News wrote that last year, the top trends for costumes were Inside Out 2, Descendance-The Rise of Red, and Beetlejuice. This year, some popular themes for costumes are cartoon characters like Curious George and K-pop demon hunters. Also, characters from TV films like Wicked and Wednesday. Many real-life celebrity couples are also becoming popular costumes, like Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift.

Kanaskie said, “I will be going with friends dressed as Ariel from The Little Mermaid, and my friend will be Sebastian.”

Other spooky season activities many people do for entertainment are Haunted Houses and Haunted corn or sunflower mazes. The top trending activities of the spooky season in 2025 are haunted attractions and fall festivals. Some of the most popular haunted houses around are in Mill Hall and Beccaria, and at Harner Farm.

Spooky season is just beginning, and there are so many more activities to do, pumpkins to carve, and shows and movies to watch. Make sure to get candy ready and look out for all of the cool costumes for Halloween on Oct. 31.
