Sarah Ambrose is in her third year of journalism at State High. Aside from being a reporter and editor for the newspaper, she is also a main anchor for the WSCH morning announcement broadcast. Outside of journalism, Sarah is a captain of the varsity swim team and a member of Master Singers.

Tonya Talone, a long time Meals on Wheels volunteer, works on the packaging line to produce meals for homebound members of the community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, State College Area Meals on Wheels has had to make drastic changes to their operations to ensure client and volunteer safety. “Instead of baking, Im filling bags with nonperishable prepackaged foods or I’m working on the line, putting the hot meal in the trays to be sealed,” Talone said.

During the District 6 Championships from March 27th to 29th, freshman Ty Uhlig competes in the boys’ 500 yard freestyle. Uhlig won his race, one of the many athletes who helped the swimming and diving team win the District Championships. “It feels good being a freshman and going to States. [Coach] Marion [Ulmer]’s training really helped me,” Uhlig said.

While spending free time at school, freshman Clarissa Theiss and junior Ella Simpson watch part of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Science-fiction movies and shows have been defying gender roles and breaking stereotypes for decades. “I think that sci-fi films like Star Wars or action movies are more valuable for girls to watch; they are realistic in the sense that they empower women,” Simpson said.

While on the music adjudication trip in New York City, senior Anna Curtis and junior Mary Ellen Schomer take photos of the World Trade Center. The music ensembles from State High won the majority of their respective categories and garnered a total of 17 trophies. “This was my first time in New York City and when I saw the city line when we first drove in it was really exhilarating,” Schomer said.

Before auditioning for Chamber Singers and Treble Makers, Ainsley Glaze, junior, and Sammy Hallacher, freshman, look over their music. Music students of all grades met in the auditorium after school on Thursday, September 6th to audition for a spot in either the underclassmen or upperclassmen a cappella choirs. “Even if I don’t get in, it’s still a good experience,” said Glaze, who had previously been in Treble Makers and was auditioning for the third time.

Members of the a cappella ensemble Chamber Singers, including junior Tori Robinson and seniors Emily Lieb and Eva Hirsch, perform a selection of holiday songs at the Governor’s Residence. Chamber Singers and Treble Makers, its underclassmen counterpart, traveled to Harrisburg on Sunday, December 10th to perform for visitors of the mansion as a part of the holiday celebrations. “I’ve never been to the Governor’s Mansion, nor did I ever think I’d go [there]. With any choir event, it always takes you to different places you never think you’ll go and it pushes you to perform in different kinds of venues,” Robinson said.

After the pre-season meeting for swimming and diving, sophomore Aubrey Zuech and head coach Aaron Workman meet to discuss goals for the new season. With a strong team for both girls and boys and a new head coach, the team hoped for an even more successful season than last year. “I think it’s going to be a good season. Different coaches bring out different things in swimmers, so I think there’s a chance we could be more successful [than last year],” Zuech said.

While on a hayride with Best Buddies, seniors Addie Orndorff and Victoria Peoples share laughter and each other’s company. With perfect weather and a good turnout, the pumpkin picking event was a huge success for the group. “It’s a fun way to just do something all together while having fun. It’s really easy to bring up conversation, like ‘Oh, that’s such a cool pumpkin!’ and because we were on a hayride, we could just talk to each other. I think it was very successful and I think we will definitely do it again next year,” Orndorff said.

German exchange student Tim Gad and the senior hosting him, Daniel Cullin, look over homework during study hall. The German exchange students were at State High from September 18th to October 4th and attended classes with their hosts. “For a few weeks, it’s like having a sibling, a twin sibling, where they’re doing everything you’re doing and with you almost all the time. It’s really cool because you always have someone you can bounce ideas off of and make jokes with,” Cullin said.

Before auditions for Treble Makers and Chamber Singers on Tuesday September 5th, juniors Tori Robinson and Megan Russell rehearse their music once more. 66 people auditioned to get a spot in either the underclassmen a cappella choir, Treble Makers or Chamber Singers, its upperclassmen counterpart. “I’m actually excited. I feel like I should be nervous, but I’m not. I was in Chamber Singers last year, so I feel good,” Robinson said.
