Olivia Rodrigo’s New Album “GUTS”

Olivia Rodrigo released her new album “GUTS” on Sept. 8th, 2023. This is her second album, after releasing “SOUR” in 2021. The album was written by Rodrigo herself, and produced with the help of Dan Nigro, Julia Michaels and Amy Allen.

Olivia Rodrigo fans have had their expectations of the album ever since it was announced on June 26, 2023. However, the first song to be released, “Vampire”, has been “teased” since the spring. Most people really liked this song, which set the standard for the rest of the album. Although some were underwhelmed with the album after the release, most loved it.

“I expected it to kind of be like a creepy, um, kind of creepy songs, but I also expected it to be pretty much just like her other album,” Avery Fuller stated. Fuller was a very big fan of “SOUR” in 2021, and is still a fan of Olivia Rodrigo now.

Fuller said the album made her feel, “Sad, very emotion filled,” and “the beat also made me kind of pumped up”.  Although most of the songs on this new album, such as “Vampire” and “all-american b****”, had a very upbeat theme, they consisted of very sad and emotional lyrics.

“Some songs didn’t sound sad, but they still were sad, if you listen to the words,” Rosie Ray said, who has also been a Rodrigo fan since 2021.

The tracks in this album were all unique, and like some of Rodrigo’s past music, they were about her relationships, how she is growing as a person, and many other things. Some songs were similar, some were completely different and shocking. All in all, listeners could find any and all of their emotions in her songs.

Rodrigo recently announced her “GUTS” World Tour. Although fans are excited, some don’t think that it will measure up to “SOUR” in terms of success.

“I just thought the songs [on ‘SOUR’] were way better and they were more original than the new ‘GUTS’ album, and ‘SOUR’ was her first album. Now ‘GUTS’ is kind of just like, exactly like ‘SOUR’,” Fuller noted.  “Vampire came out like a month ago and people were not that psyched about it, I don’t think. Yeah, but people were psyched about ‘SOUR’ right when it came out, so.”

Olivia Rodrigo has been an important figure in Gen Z & pop culture. When her first album came out, most people viewed her as just a teen girl that sings, because most of her songs were about her experiences throughout her teenage years. Although she has acted as a role model for teens and new generations, she has broken her stereotype of only being a teen, Gen Z singer.  Her new album projects her growth, both as an artist and as a person.

“GUTS” was definitely a new experience for all fans and Rodrigo herself. Most people liked it but obviously as any other album, it still wasn’t for everyone. However people may feel about this album, it is a new and important stage of Rodrigo’s career and fans are very proud of her.
