Penn State freshmen gather in large groups outside of East Halls on August 19, 2020. Despite the local town’s ordinance concerning large gatherings and required face coverings, students were found to be gathering in large groups without masks as soon as they returned to campus.

Who Takes the Blame When College Reopenings Fail?

On Wednesday, November 6th, the State High Bands came together for their first concert of the year. Sophomore Nika Kello, a member of State High’s Symphonic Band, warms up for the band concert on her clarinet. “I had a wonderful experience at this concert. It was amazing to display the product of our hard work at many hours of rehearsals to our friends, family, and other music students,” Kello said.

Sophomores Lucinda Kaye and Caitlin Moser from the Environmental Club participate in the Holiday Bazaar. The Environmental Club sold jewelry and ornaments made out of recycled material at the Holiday Bazaar. “We were selling things made out of recycled material because there is a lot of waste associated with the holidays and we wanted to reduce that waste as well as show people that you can make nice gifts out of things that are usually considered trash,” Kaye said.

January 2019 marked the implementation of Safe2Say Something across Pennsylvania school districts. Safe2Say is a state-wide program that enables students and adults to report potential threats of violence and other problems before they happen. However, despite its positive impact and intentions, students have some concerns about the system. “While the ability to provide students with an anonymous reporting system is definitely correct in intention, I think that the incorporation of Safe2Say into our school community has spiraled into yet another mocked and underused school enforced program. Safe2Say is necessary at State High, but it would be much more effective if it was introduced in a less cheesy manner that allowed kids to simply learn about it without the lengthy videos and motivational speeches,” sophomore Clarissa Theiss said.

Volunteer Cathy Kennedy helps Pumpkin Festival attendees make corn husk dolls. Kennedy has been volunteering at the Pumpkin Festival for the past five years. “I just love the gardens, and I think [the Pumpkin Festival] is a wonderful community event. We get thousands of people who come and enjoy the gardens,” Kennedy said.

It was a bittersweet night, with the seniors winning their matches but being reminded that their time with the State High Girls Tennis Team was soon coming to an end. “Even though I’ve only been playing tennis for two years,” Muroski said, “Senior night is about being reflective and enjoying the moment.”

The top 10 democratic presidential candidates gathered for a climate town hall to discuss how they were going to tackle the climate crisis in their administrations. The town hall lasted for seven hours on September 4th, 2019, where voters were invited to ask the candidates questions. “I want America to come together regardless of Republicans or Democrats or your geography or any other difference,” Beto O’Rourke said. “This is our challenge, and I know that we are up to the test.”

The State High Marching Band plays at one of the football team’s home games along with the Majorettes and the State High Dance Team. Marching Band started the year off by marching at the Grange fair and playing at home football games. “My favorite parts of marching band are the fun music we play, the time we get to spend with our friends in band, and the excitement of going to games,” Nick Letwin, sophomore, who plays the Alto Saxophone, said.

Above all, there’s one thing that Lower loves most about the sport. “I love that you have to work together with your team in order to be successful.”

Students at State High fill jars with coins for the Interact Club Change Drive. The fundraiser, which ran from November 5th to the 19th. They raised $365 in Walmart and Weis gift cards. “Even though it wasn’t much, I wanted to help others and give back to the community. We should always be grateful for what we have, but it’s especially important to remind ourselves about how lucky we are during the holiday season, and what we can do to help others. You don’t have to do much, even a few cents can make a difference,” Jenny Yu, freshman, said.
